Johnny Gillespie

Johnny Gillespie works in healthcare administration as a Patient Relations Specialist with Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and he characterizes his work as a mosaic of life experiences from his time as a performer, yoga instructor, and hospital Chaplain.   One tile of this mosaic was cultivated shortly after high school as Johnny earned a living as lead guitarist for a pop band Sudden Impact, performing in numerous festivals in the Midwest.  This led to him earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Columbia College Chicago in 1991.   After having been a yoga practitioner since his early teens, in 2002 Johnny added another tile to the mosaic by obtaining a yoga teacher certification from N.U. Yoga Center in Chicago and taught yoga full-time at various yoga centers and health clubs.  And yet another tile of the mosaic was put into place as he obtained a Master of Divinity Degree from Chicago Theological Seminary in 2009.  After completing a residency at Lutheran General Hospital, Johnny became a full-time Chaplain at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, incorporating all the mosaic tiles of his experiences in providing care for patients and families particularly in end-of-life cases in the Emergency Room, ICU, and member of the Clinical Ethics Team.  This mosaic was displayed in his care for dying patients and their families through playing classical guitar phrasings, facilitating life stories, and leading rituals for emotional wellness.   Johnny continues to celebrate his love for music, his joy of Hatha Yoga, and the importance of offering compassion to those seeking healing.
